A Reverse Drive-Through Bringing Christmas Cheer to the Border

This Christmas, Albury Wodonga FoodShare is inviting the community to take part in a festive giving experience with a twist—its very first reverse drive-through food drive.

With more than 100,000 people living across the Border region, and many facing uncertainty about where their next meal will come from over the holiday season, FoodShare’s mission is simple: help as many families as possible feel supported, nourished, and hopeful this Christmas.

A New Spin on Giving Back

On Saturday, December 6, from 9am to 1pm, FoodShare will open the gates at 81 Wigg Street, Wodonga for a Christmas Food Drive designed for effortless community participation.

Community Pantry Coordinator Nicole Eirth says the drive-through idea came naturally.

“We’re asking people to drive through with a donation—we have a thoroughfare from Wigg Street to Reid Street,” Nicole explains. “People can bring a bag, a single product, or even a couple of boxes. We’ll collect it straight from their car and offer a small Christmas treat as a thank you.”

The Pantry urgently needs non-perishable staples—pasta, rice, muesli bars, canned goods—as well as essential hygiene items like shampoo and toilet paper.

“It’s not just about food,” Nicole adds. “Many of our visitors need help with hygiene and cleaning items too. These basics are part of our program and make a huge difference.”

Supporting Local Families, All Year Round

Since 2011, FoodShare has been a lifeline for the Riverina community. Every month, its Community Pantry supports around 600 families—each with a unique story and set of challenges.

Chief Executive Katrina Pawley says the need spans all demographics.

“We see people who’ve been made redundant, families managing illness, people who’ve lost income security, and others caring for elderly parents,” she says. “Our services help keep people from reaching breaking point so they can get back on their feet.”

While the Christmas appeal is vital, Katrina stresses that food insecurity isn’t seasonal. According to Foodbank’s 2024 Hunger Report, nearly two million Australian households experience food insecurity annually.

That’s why FoodShare encourages ongoing support through its $25 monthly donation program, which funds food vouchers used by individuals and families experiencing hardship.

“Just like a streaming subscription, $25 a month is affordable for many,” Katrina says. “But instead of entertainment, it puts food on the table for someone who really needs it.”

These vouchers allow people to choose the groceries that suit their cultural, dietary, and personal needs—helping restore dignity during overwhelming times.

“When life gets tough, food is often the first thing people sacrifice,” Nicole says. “Our Pantry and voucher program give people back a sense of control, choice, and hope.”

A Bright New Look for a Bright Cause

This year’s Christmas Appeal also marks the debut of FoodShare’s refreshed branding, including eye-catching vans already travelling throughout the region.

“We see the impact of the cost-of-living crisis every day,” Katrina says. “But we also see incredible kindness from our community—and that’s what keeps us going.”
