Our Feed More, Waste Less Programs

FoodShare’s food relief services are supported by programs to increase direct access to fresh, healthy food and extend the life of perishable items. A strong commitment to sustainability drives our ongoing optimisation of food recovery processes to minimise environmental impact. By continually exploring new ways to improve efficiency, our sustainability initiatives ensure that resources are used effectively while maximising their positive impact on the community.

Through these programs, FoodShare not only reduces food waste but also strengthens local food security, ensuring that more nutritious food reaches individuals and families in need across the region.

Our Community Garden

In partnership with Wodonga TAFE, our community garden is helping to increase the supply of fresh produce, foster community engagement, and promote sustainability across our region. These gardens have been developed with the dual purpose to provide fresh, nutritious food for people in need, and to create a shared space that encourages collaboration, learning and social connection.

More Meals

More of our partner agencies are now facilitating meal preparation to increase both the variety and quality of food available to those in need.

These collaborations enhance our collective ability to utilise bulk food items that may be too large for smaller distributions. By doing so, we ensure that more meals are prepared and that greater support is provided to community members experiencing food insecurity.

Food Preservation

A volunteer-led food preservation program centred around saving berries (which were previously destined for livestock) is helping extend local food supplies by transforming fruit into jam.

This initiative combines community engagement with sustainable food practices, while also giving participants hands-on experience in food preservation, cooking techniques, and the importance of reducing food waste. The preserved products now provide additional food options for individuals and families in need.

The Border Easter Egg Hunt

The Border Easter Egg Hunt is a much-loved community celebration that brings families together for a day of fun and giving back. Established in 2018 by a passionate local volunteer group, the event found a new home with FoodShare in 2024 after the original committee disbanded.

Since then, families have enjoyed a fun filled morning full of family activities including face painting, roving entertainers, stage performances, giant board games, and special visits from the Easter Bunny.

More than just a day of festivities, the Border Easter Egg Hunt has made a real difference — raising over $36,000 in the past two years to help FoodShare provide meals for local families doing it tough.

The next Border Easter Egg Hunt will be held on Saturday 28 March 2026 at Albury Botanic Gardens.

Landfill Diversion

Partnerships with waste wise organisations have enabled the diversion of food from landfill, with more non-edible items now redirected to worm farms and other recycling facilities. These initiatives expand our capacity to rescue and repurpose larger volumes of food that were previously sent to livestock feed or landfill.

Our sustainability efforts not only reduce food waste but also enhance the nutritional quality of food available to the wider community. By encouraging community participation, leveraging local resources, and fostering collaboration among volunteers and partners, our landfill diversion initiatives are helping to build a more sustainable and effective model for food relief.
