FoodShare has received a $5,000 Bushfire Relief Fund Community Grant from Border Trust to purchase quality nutritious food for those experiencing hardship in rural and regional communities impacted by the 2019/20 summer bushfires.
FoodShare immediately responded to the bushfire emergency on New Years Day in 2020 by operating the warehouse seven days a week for all of January. As part of the emergency relief effort, FoodShare distributed food, pet food and basic grocery items to bushfire effected communities.
The huge community effort driven by FoodShare was supported by a virtual army of community volunteers, which resulted in around 100,000kg of food and essential household items being donated within the first few weeks of the year to residents located within Towong, Alpine, Greater Hume and the Snowy Valleys.
Since the summer bushfires hit our region, FoodShare’s services have evolved leading to the implementation of FoodShare’s Community Pantry program, which has enabled food hampers to be delivered directly to members of the community, particularly families who are requiring emergency food relief. The food hampers have been well received by the community with many individuals and agencies finding the new service very beneficial.
We are so pleased to introduce Sue Thornton to the FoodShare team who is taking on the vital role of Administration and Volunteer Coordinator.
After running a successful family business for many years, Sue graduated from the Alpine Valleys Community Leadership Program with a desire for greater community involvement. She started volunteering with FoodShare in November 2019 and is a great believer in sustainability, recycling and equal access.
Currently 800,000 kilograms of food is collected each year by FoodShare from over 65 suppliers. This equates to 1.55 million meals per year which is distributed to 24,000 people in the community experiencing financial hardship through 225 regional agencies, educational institutions and community groups. FoodShare’s catchment area operates within a 150km radius of Albury-Wodonga.
Sue will support FoodShare by liasing with our network of agencies and local suppliers as well as provide support to FoodShare’s team of incredible volunteers.
We welcome Sue to the team.
